Add the gateway as an outgoing (SMTP) server in Thunderbird.

Thunderbird lets you add the gateway as an additional outgoing server without disturbing your existing account setup.

  1. Open Account Settings → Outgoing Server (SMTP).
  2. Click Add to create a new outgoing server.
  3. Fill in the gateway's inbound server settings — server address, port, and your account email as the username.
  4. Set the connection security to STARTTLS (port 587) or SSL/TLS (port 465), matching the port you used.
  5. Under your identity's Account Settings, set this new server as the outgoing server for the account you want to send protected attachments from.
Exact menu names shift slightly between Thunderbird versions — if a step doesn't match what you see, look for "Outgoing Server" or "SMTP" in Account Settings; the underlying fields (server, port, username, security) are the same regardless of where Thunderbird currently puts them.
